Role
The University of British Columbia is home to the only Faculty of Medicine in the Province. In partnership with BC’s Health Authorities and other Universities, the Faculty of Medicine provides innovative educational and research programs in the areas of health and life sciences through an integrated and province-wide delivery model which relies heavily on technology. Founded in 1950 with a graduating class of 60 students, the Faculty of Medicine now has more than 2,590 students at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels and provides teaching to several thousand additional students from other disciplines at UBC.
Faculty members, students, staff and alumni are actively engaged in leading edge research, education and community service across the province. With over 1,500,000 square feet of Academic Space, planning is underway to develop additional academic facilities at university and hospital sites throughout the Province. At any given time, the Faculty may be involved in 20 to 30 major or minor capital projects with a total value exceeding 50 million dollars. The role of the Director in managing these initiatives and Faculty of Medicine space is critical to the success and growth of the Faculty’s contribution in advancing the health of individuals and communities, locally, nationally and internationally.
Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer of the Faculty of Medicine, the Director, Facilities Planning, Construction and Utilization is responsible for providing strategic leadership in the planning, construction and utilization of Academic Space. To fulfill this mandate, the Director provides direction in key matters, including space planning budgeting, negotiations, construction and facilities operations and maintenance for new and existing facilities used by the Faculty of Medicine. As most of the Faculty’s facilities are built, owned, operated and/or maintained by other agencies and institutions under legislation, utilization agreements, or institutional regulations, the Director negotiates on behalf of the Faculty to ensure that the Faculty’s requirements are met. With the high volume and complexity of the position requirements, the candidate for this role must have a diplomatic, team-oriented and flexible disposition and demonstrated problem-solving, leadership and collaborative planning skills. The ideal candidate must have a high tolerance for ambiguity, an orientation to results and be able to anticipate the long-term ramifications of decisions. The candidate must possess the insight and finesse to influence effectively across all levels of an organization as well as across organizational boundaries to ensure the Faculty of Medicine has ongoing access to appropriate and well-equipped facilities. The Director must possess substantive knowledge of space planning, project management, capital planning, budgeting, construction and facility maintenance and operations construction and the proven ability to achieve sustainable results in complex environments, ideally within the health and academic sectors. With the talent to inspire and direct a team, the candidate must have a minimum of 10 years of related experience and a graduate degree in planning, Project Management, Engineering or Architecture from a recognized University.
