Based at A&W’s Head Office in North Vancouver, the Manager, Supply Chain Food Safety & Quality Assurance is responsible for overseeing food safety standards and practices throughout the supply chain and for supporting food safety in A&W restaurants to ensure zero incidents of foodborne illness. In consultation with A&W’s food purchasing managers and external suppliers, this role is responsible for establishing and maintaining specifications for all A&W food products. The position also has a mandate to develop effective relationships and to implement oversight and audit processes that encourage supplier innovation and compliance with quality processes and standards in all areas of the supply chain, including animal welfare and husbandry. The role reports to the Vice President, Food Safety, QA and Animal Welfare and works collaboratively with members of A&W’s Purchasing & Distribution, Operations, and Marketing departments as well as with franchisees, external consultants, science and industry experts and representatives of more than 150 suppliers. Once the COVID 19 pandemic situation stabilizes and travel restrictions ease, the Manager, Supply Chain Food Safety & Quality Assurance will require up to 30% travel within North America.
The candidate must have a university degree in science, preferably at the Master’s level, with a specialization in microbiology or food science and at least one year’s experience in challenging roles in food safety and quality assurance. Ideally, this experience has been in complex, dynamic contexts where the candidate has developed and displayed excellent business acumen, sound judgment, initiative and superb skills in analyzing both quantitative and qualitative data. The candidate must have solid knowledge of food safety and quality assurance, including knowledge of HACCP and the Global Food Safety Initiative as well as knowledge of good manufacturing and agricultural practices, auditing protocols and government regulations related to food safety and handling procedures. Curious, confident, humble and resourceful, the candidate must have a genuine interest in food technology and supply chain safety. The candidate must have excellent influencing skills and the drive and finesse to develop effective networks with a wide range of business and science professionals. Practical and strategic, the candidate must have the ability to consult with others and multi-task with ease, insight and appreciation for the business impacts of decisions. A confident self-starter with flexibility, common sense and excellent attention to detail, the candidate must have the capacity to embrace the big picture and know when to seek advice. A proactive leader and team player, the candidate must have a high tolerance for ambiguity and the ability to work independently, balance multiple projects, problem solve and achieve results.
